Yesterday we attended mobile hackathon sponsored by Microsoft and PhoneGap. The goal was to build a PhoneGap app and install in on Windows Phone. We used Tiggzi App Builder, PhoneGap Build and very quickly installed an app on Windows Phone.

Thanks to @jccim for inviting us and giving us a brand new Windows Phone for testing.

    Step 1.

Build an HTML5/jQuery Mobile app in Tiggzi Mobile App Builder:

    Step 2.

    Export the app as HTML/JavaScript/CSS:

We will be adding Windows Phone support to Tiggzi in May (first source code export, followed by binary build).

    Step 3.

Upload the app to PhoneGap Build, download the Windows Phone version:

    You are done!

  • Windows Phone Facebook app to bring threaded messaging, location and more

    Deals @ Amazon:

Anyone who uses smartphones knows that having an ecosystem that offers the most popular mobile applications is a necessity. Well, with Windows Phone being so new, it has an uphill climb to amass the large number of apps that mega mobile operating systems like Android and iOS make available. Despite its small number of apps, the Windows Phone platform has been able to put together a decent Facebook.

Windows Phone left a note to its followers on its Facebook page which boast about a much improved 2.5 version. The Windows Phone Facebook application will soon be in the Marketplace. New features include: threaded messaging will be in including group messaging, tagging for friends and locations in posts, the ability to delete posts and comments, added active links in posts, updates to the photo comments and likes page, and the ability to “like” comments.

This is always a good thing when major applications like Facebook get a much improved update, regardless to what mobile operating system it runs on. Microsoft is trying to ramp up its development of major smartphone applications that users can’t live without, like its recent release of its official Skype 1.0 Windows Phone app. That said, Windows Phone is playing from behind — way behind — so it’ll be interesting to see the ground it can make up by the end of the year when it comes mobile applications.

  • Service unveiled for building Windows Phone apps in the cloud

    Deals @ Amazon:

IDG News Service - Windows Phone can now be targeted by PhoneGap Build, a cloud-based service for creating cross-platform mobile phone apps, according to a Tuesday blog post from Nitobi, the service’s creators.

Developers first write their applications using HTML, CSS or JavaScript then upload the code to the Build service, which sends back apps for Apple’s iOS, Google’s Android, Research In Motion’s BlackBerry OS — and now Windows Phone too.

Instead of configuring environments and installing platform-specific tools, developers can focus on writing apps, according to the blog post. Build is still under development, but developers that want to try it out can sign up to test the public beta version, it said.

Once the product has been launched, the main priority is providing PhoneGap Build as a web service that can seamlessly integrate with existing technology infrastructure and tools, according to an FAQ.

The service will remain free for open source projects, and pricing details for commercial applications will be announced closer to the public launch.

Also, earlier this week, PhoneGap’s owner, Adobe Systems, introduced Creative Suite 6, which has better integration with Build. The integration allows developers who use Dreamweaver, an HTML editor, to target more platforms.

Adobe acquired PhoneGap’s creator Nitobi in October last year, and about a month later Adobe announced plans to ditch Flash for mobile app development and instead focus on HTML5.

Gaining the support of cross-platform tool vendors such as Adobe is important for Microsoft as it wants to increase the number of applications available for its mobile OS.

Soon two-thirds of the top 100 applications for competing operating systems will be available on the Windows Phone Marketplace, and that number continues to grow, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop said last week.

  • Facebook for Windows Phone getting a major refresh

    Deals @ Amazon:

Facebook for Windows Phone getting a major refresh, now with less suck

The Facebook app for Windows Phone is certainly serviceable, but it’s never really been anything to get excited about. In fact, it wasn’t really something you looked forward to using and it’s been slow to add the features considered standard on competing mobile platforms. Well, with the soon to land version 2.5, that capability gap will get quite a bit smaller. It hasn’t hit the Marketplace yet, but when it does it’ll bring support for group chats, threaded messaging, tagging in posts and the ability to like or delete not only posts but comments as well. The photo pages have also gotten a visual refresh and you can now tap on links in posts to go straight to the relevant content. For a few more details hit up the source, and keep checking the Marketplace for updates — Facebook promises it won’t be long now.

  • Facebook Outlines Its Windows Phone App Plans

    Deals @ Amazon:

Facebook for Windows Phone. Photo: Facebook

The Windows Phone OS offers deep integration with Facebook — better Facebook integration, in fact, than what you’ll find in Android or iOS. But there are still times when a Windows Phone user needs the power of a dedicated Facebook app. And because Facebook doesn’t yet have a phone of its own — though the HTC Status made a clumsy stab at it — the Facebook team is hard at work improving the social network’s experience on all mobile platforms.

Facebook outlined Tuesday upcoming updates to version 2.5 of its Windows Phone app. The updated app will add a number of features, including the ability to tag friends and locations, delete posts and comments, tap on active links in a post, and ‘like’ comments — a very popular request. The app will also feature an updated photo comments and likes page, and include threaded messaging in the Windows Phone Metro style.

“We read every comment you submit on Facebook, through email, and through the Marketplace, we use them to plan features for releases and we really appreciate all the work you put into feeding back. We’re listening :-) ,” stated an official Facebook update (in somewhat fractured English). And listening might be the best plan for Facebook.

Nick Bilton of the New York Times recently wrote a story about how both Facebook and Google are struggling in the mobile space. His thesis is that employees are essentially coddled into staying on campus, and therefore rarely need to use their mobile devices like the rest of us “unfortunates” who have to actually step out into “the real world” to find coffee, food and sunsets.

While not everyone finds this argument convincing, there’s no question that Facebook’s mobile apps need attention. In order to compete in the mobile marketplace and stay relevant, Facebook will need to improve its on-the-go experience.

And it looks like Facebook recognizes this — the company updated its Android app late last week and now we can expect a refreshed Windows Phone version coming soon. The company did not announce an official release date for the Windows Phone app update, only stating that it is “close to release.”

But will app updates give Facebook enough of a mobile push, or will the company need to release something a bit more grand, like a full-fledged Facebook phone? Or none of the above? Tell us what you think in the comments section below.

  • Skype app released for Windows Phone

    Deals @ Amazon:

Microsoft has released a full version of a Skype app for the Windows Phone operating system.

The free app, available in 18 languages, adds Windows Phone users to the 200 million people using Skype on computers, smartphones and tablets monthly. Users can connect over the Internet telephony and chat service via 4G, 3G and Wi-Fi.

In beta from February, the formal app adds video calling in portrait mode and friend management capabilities including invite, accept invitations, block, and unblock contacts. It’s a 6-megabyte download, and Microsoft says it will only install and run on devices using the 7.5 Mango version of the WP operating system. That would exclude some of its lower-end phones, like the not-yet-released Lumia 610, using an earlier Tango version.

You’ll remember that Skype was acquired by Microsoft last October for $8.5 billion. Thus, this inclusion in the announcement should go without saying: “We believe in the great potential of the Windows Phone platform and will continue to invest over time to enable experiences unmatched by any other app in the market.”

The Verge reports that app has some limitations in this initial release, including that the app runs only in foreground for receiving communications, lacks SMS send support and will install and run only on devices with 512 MB of memory. Microsoft might address these issues in a later update.

  • Windows Phone Exec Gavin Has Kim Left Microsoft For Security-Focused NQ Mobile

    Deals @ Amazon:

    gavinkim

Gavin Kim certainly knows how to keep things interesting. After spending years at Samsung and winding up as the company’s VP of Content and Services, Kim jumped ship to take point on Microsoft’s Windows Phone marketing efforts only to resign his post after five months.

So what greener pastures has tempted Kim this time? As it turns out, he has found himself a new home at NQ Mobile (formerly known as NetQin), a provider of mobile security services and applications where he will fill the newly created Chief Product Officer post.

Interestingly enough, Kim is the latest in a line of high ranking former Samsungers to make the switch to NQ Mobile. Ex-Samsung VP of Strategy Omar Khan was was tapped just a few months ago to become the company’s co-CEO alongside company co-founder Henry Lin, and one-time Samsung PR head Kim Titus recently joined up as NQ’s director of communications.

It may seem like something of step down — going from the likes of Samsung and Microsoft to a mobile security firm without much of a presence here in the United States. NQ Mobile pegs their mobile security application as being the most widely-used in the world (thanks in part to their huge presence in China), and with these recent staff additions in place it looks like NQ Mobile is gearing up to tackle that problem head on.

A representative for the company tells me that part of that strategy going forward is to take a page of the company’s Asia-focused playbook and build upon “OEM and carrier relationships” in the States. Considering that Kim has had experience working with major hardware manufacturers as well as wireless carriers, he seems like a strong choice to push NQ forward, though only time will tell if they pick up the traction they need to compete. The mobile security place is one occupied by plenty of big brands, and Lookout in particular looks like a savvy competitor — they’ve already locked down partnerships with carriers like T-Mobile USA and Deutsche Telekom.
